A nice M88 Sporter by W. Forester Berlin

A big thanks to Douglas Kerley from Lynnwood,
WA for providing this picture and description of his rifle. 

Original German M88 Mauser Sporter by W. Forster, Berlin. Serial number 23179 on butplate 179 on bolt root along with 495 and crown N proof. Also marked on barrel "KONIGL: HOFBUCHSENMACHER". Floral design etching. Off set claw mounts added. Double set triggers. Blued octagonal barrel. Flip sight. 8mm or so. Nicely checkered stock. Small sling swivels. Spoon checkered bolt handle. Bolt and some other parts color cased.

A nice sporter from the collection of Steve Frey, author of  Imported Military Firearms 1866-1899. 

Steve has a nice website with a few items for sale including this rifle. This is a CAST BULLET target rifle: 8x57J, EX, $300. Made from an M1888 German Commission rifle with original .318 bore and chamber. In-the-white metal, custom full-length stock, 3-shot magazine, L.E.R. scope.
